Baby Teeth can show Autism Risks
Shed baby teeth were recently studied by dental researchers at Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai. Baby teeth are virtual time capsules filled with information about the levels of different minerals during development and show the effects of environmental pollutants on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
One out of every 68 people are affected by ASD in the US, There is speculation it is caused by both genetic predisposition and environmental factors. After studying these baby teeth from both those affected by ASD and their siblings that were not affected they found in the ASD group higher levels of lead and lower levels of both zinc and manganese. Statistically the correlation was so strong the higher levels of heavy metal concentrations during the last part of pregnancy and the first months after birth predicted the severity of ASD eight to ten years later in the child’s life.
